About the Visual Memory Test

The visual memory test measures how much visual-spatial information you can hold at once. A grid appears, some squares flash white for a moment, and you have to click exactly those squares from memory. Each level the grid gets bigger and more squares light up. You have three lives — make it as far as you can.

How to play

  1. Press Start. A grid of squares appears and some flash white.
  2. Memorise which squares lit up, then they hide.
  3. Click every square that flashed — in any order.
  4. Clear a level to grow the grid. Three mistakes ends the test.

What it measures

This test focuses on your visual-spatial short-term memory. Most people reach around level 9–11. Getting past level 13 means you have a strong visual memory.

What counts as a good score?

Ranges below are drawn from published research — sources are listed at the end of the page.

Developing Levels 1–4 Below typical adult visual span. Very common on a first attempt before you settle on an encoding strategy.
Average Levels 5–7 Matches the classic Corsi span of about five, plus the boost this format gives from seeing the whole grid at once.
Above average Levels 8–11 Strong spatial encoding — usually people converting the pattern into a shape or a route rather than storing individual squares.
Exceptional Level 12+ Rare without deliberate technique. At this level players are almost always chunking the grid into recognisable sub-shapes.

Visual-spatial span is conventionally measured with the Corsi block-tapping task, where typical adult span is around five blocks — roughly two fewer than verbal digit span. Bands below map that literature onto this test's grid levels.

How to improve your visual memory score

1.See shapes, not squares

Three squares in a row is one object, not three. Your visual system is built to store shapes cheaply — let it.

2.Trace a path

Connect the lit squares into a single route in the order you scan them. A path is one memory; scattered dots are many.

3.Anchor to the corners

Encode positions relative to fixed landmarks — "top-left corner, then two down" — rather than as free-floating coordinates.

4.Do not sub-vocalise

Naming positions out loud pushes a spatial task into your verbal loop, which is already narrower and slower. Keep it visual.

5.Blink deliberately

A brief closed-eye pause right after the pattern vanishes protects the visual trace from being overwritten by whatever you look at next.

Why visual span is smaller than digit span

Baddeley and Hitch's working-memory model splits short-term storage into a phonological loop for sound and a visuospatial sketchpad for images and locations. The two run in parallel with separate capacities — which is why you can hold a phone number and a route simultaneously without much interference.

The sketchpad is the smaller of the two. Corsi block-tapping, the standard clinical measure, puts typical adult spatial span at around five items against roughly seven for digits. If your score here is lower than your number memory score, that gap is expected rather than a deficit.
