About the Stroop Test

The Stroop test is one of the most famous experiments in psychology. The word "RED" appears written in blue ink — and naming the ink colour while ignoring the word is surprisingly hard, because your brain reads automatically before it does anything else. That conflict is called the Stroop effect. You have 45 seconds: tap the ink colour as many times as you can. Wrong answers cost a point.

What counts as a good score?

The Stroop effect is one of the most replicated findings in psychology. Response times to incongruent items are reliably slower than to congruent ones; the size of that gap, not raw speed, is the measure of interest.

How to improve your stroop test score

1.Defocus the word

Let the text go slightly blurry. Reading is automatic only when the word is sharp; softening it weakens the interference at its source.

2.Look at one letter

Fixate a single character rather than the whole word. A partial glimpse is much harder for your reading system to resolve automatically.

3.Name the colour before you read

Commit to answering on colour the instant the item appears. Hesitation gives the word time to win.

4.Accept the gap

You cannot eliminate the effect — it is a consequence of reading fluency. The goal is a smaller gap, not no gap.

Ninety years of the same result

John Ridley Stroop published the effect in 1935: naming the ink colour of a colour word takes measurably longer when word and colour disagree. It has replicated in essentially every population tested, in every writing system tried, and it remains one of the sturdiest effects in experimental psychology at a time when a great deal else has not replicated.

The standard explanation is automaticity. For a fluent reader, reading is not optional — the word is decoded before you can intervene, and naming the colour requires actively suppressing that output. The Stroop task is therefore used less as a memory measure than as a probe of inhibitory control, and it appears throughout clinical neuropsychology for exactly that reason.

Why children find it easier

Pre-literate children show little to no Stroop effect, because there is no automatic reading process to suppress. The interference grows as reading fluency develops and peaks in adulthood. This is a nice demonstration that the "deficit" the test exposes is really a side effect of a skill.

On a single casual attempt, very little. Interference size varies with fatigue, screen, and how fast you are pushing. Clinical interpretation depends on standardised administration that a web version cannot provide.
