About the Number Memory Test

The number memory test measures your digit span — the number of digits you can hold in short-term memory at once. A number flashes on screen, disappears, and you type it back. Get it right and the next number is one digit longer. Most adults can hold around seven digits; the world record is well over a hundred.

How to play

What counts as a good score?

Level Digits recalled What it means
Developing 4–5 digits Typical for younger children, or for anyone testing while tired or distracted. Span is unusually sensitive to sleep and stress.
Average 6–8 digits Where most adults land. This is the range Miller's "magical number seven" describes.
Above average 9–11 digits Strong working memory, or early chunking — grouping digits into pairs and triples the way you read a phone number.
Exceptional 12+ digits Almost always a trained technique rather than raw span: chunking, a major system, or a memory palace.

Bands follow the classic digit-span literature. Miller (1956) put immediate memory span at "seven, plus or minus two" items; later work by Cowan (2001) argues the true chunk-free capacity is closer to four, with higher scores reflecting chunking strategy rather than raw storage.

How to improve your number memory score

1.Chunk in threes

Read 4 9 2 7 1 5 as "four-ninety-two, seven-fifteen". Two chunks are far easier to hold than seven digits, and this single habit is usually worth two or three levels immediately.

2.Say them out loud

Sub-vocalising loads the phonological loop — the part of working memory built for sound. Silent reading leans on weaker visual encoding.

3.Rehearse in a loop

Repeat the sequence continuously from the moment it appears until you type it. Any gap lets decay start.

4.Learn a major system

Map each digit to a consonant sound (1=t, 2=n, 3=m…), turn chunks into words, and string the words into an image. This is how competitors clear 50+ digits.

5.Test when rested

Digit span is one of the first things sleep deprivation degrades. Comparing a tired score to a rested one tells you nothing about your memory.

Where "seven plus or minus two" came from

In 1956 George Miller published "The Magical Number Seven, Plus or Minus Two", observing that across wildly different tasks — judging tones, recalling digits, identifying tastes — people topped out at around seven items. It became one of the most cited papers in psychology and the reason phone numbers were historically seven digits long.

Miller's deeper point is the one people forget: the limit is on *chunks*, not on raw information. Seven letters and seven words are equally hard to hold, even though the words carry far more data. That is why chunking works so reliably — it does not expand the shelf, it puts bigger boxes on it.

The modern revision

Nelson Cowan's 2001 review argued that once you strip out rehearsal and chunking, genuine capacity is nearer four items. Most of the gap between four and your score on this test is strategy, not storage — which is good news, because strategy is trainable and storage largely is not.

This is also why digit span is a poor proxy for intelligence despite appearing in IQ batteries for over a century. It measures a real and useful thing, but a trained score and an untrained score are not measuring the same thing at all.

Working memory is unusually sensitive to sleep, caffeine, stress and time of day. Swings of two digits between sessions are completely normal. If you want a meaningful number, average five attempts taken in similar conditions.

Is it cheating to group the digits?

Not at all — chunking is the skill the test is really probing. Every high scorer does it. The only thing that makes a score uninterpretable is writing the digits down.
