About the Schulte Table

The Schulte Table is a deceptively simple grid: the numbers 1 to 25, scrambled. Your job is to tap them in order as fast as possible. Developed by German psychiatrist Walter Schulte, it has been used for decades to train visual attention, search speed and peripheral vision — speed readers swear by it. The pro technique: fix your eyes on the centre cell and find the numbers with your peripheral vision, without letting your gaze wander.

How to play

  1. Press Start. A 5×5 grid appears with the numbers 1–25 scrambled.
  2. Tap 1, then 2, then 3 — in order, as fast as you can.
  3. Wrong taps flash red and cost you time.
  4. The clock stops on 25. Beat your best time.

What it measures

This test focuses on your visual attention, search speed and peripheral vision. The average adult finishes in 40–50 seconds. Under 30 seconds is excellent; trained speed readers get under 20.

No published norms exist for this format, so the ranges below are practical skill tiers rather than measured population data.

The Schulte table originated in mid-20th-century German and Soviet attention research and is still used in speed-reading training, but it has no widely accepted English-language normative dataset. Treat these as practical tiers, not clinical cut-offs.

How to improve your schulte table score

1.Stare at the centre

Fix your gaze on the middle cell and do not move it. The whole point of the exercise is finding numbers with peripheral vision rather than by scanning.

2.Look for the next one early

While clicking 7, already be locating 8. Overlapping search with action is where most of the time saving lives.

3.Stop re-reading

Once you have ruled out a region, trust it. Rechecking cells you have already dismissed is the single biggest time sink.

4.Widen before you speed up

Practise seeing more of the grid at once at a comfortable pace first. Speed follows a wider span; it does not create one.

What the grid is actually training

A Schulte table separates two things people usually conflate: how fast your eyes move, and how much you take in without moving them. Because the numbers are scattered at random, the only way to get substantially faster is to expand your useful field of view — the region around fixation from which you can extract information in a single glance.

That is why the exercise persists in speed-reading curricula. The transfer to reading is debated and the strong claims made for it are not well supported, but the narrow skill it trains — recognising a target in the periphery without a saccade — is real and measurable.
