The Championship promotes the top two clubs automatically. The sides finishing third to sixth then contest a play-off, and its final at Wembley is regularly described as the most valuable single match in world football because of what Premier League promotion is worth. That structure means the champion of this division is frequently not the most talked-about club of the season.
It is also the most punishing schedule in English football: twenty-four clubs, forty-six league matches, plus cup competitions and, for four of them, the play-offs. Attendances rank among the highest of any second-tier league anywhere.
Unlike the divisions above it, the Championship rarely produces repeat winners — clubs good enough to win it are promoted, and the ones that come back down arrive under different circumstances. The result is a title list with far more different names on it than any top flight, which makes the year-by-year questions above genuinely hard.
