About the Movie Genres Memory Game
Horror, comedy, western, noir — twelve film genres as a memory board. Ideal for film-club nights and classrooms talking about story types, without naming any protected franchise.
What's in the Movie Genres deck
The full deck, so you know exactly what you're up against — 12 cards, 6 pairs: 😱 Horror😂 Comedy💘 Romance🤠 Western🕵️ Noir🚀 Sci-Fi🪄 Fantasy🎤 Musical⚔️ Action👶 Family📜 Drama🧩 Mystery
Study tip: link the first three — horror, comedy and romance — into one ridiculous mental picture. Absurd images stick; lists don't. Then do the same for the next three, and the board will memorise itself.
How to memorise a film and TV board
Give each tile a scene. The popcorn belongs in the dark, the clapperboard opens the film, the spotlight finds the star — entertainment decks are a night at the cinema in object form, and staging them as one evening out links the whole board in a single pass.
Cast the order too: what happens first at the cinema — tickets, snacks, trailers, the film, the credits? Most entertainment decks roughly follow the arc, and an arc is just a story with your memory as the audience.
Fun Facts About Movie Genres
- Genre labels help audiences pick a mood, not a quality ranking.
- Film noir peaked in the 1940s and 1950s.
- Musicals mix narrative with song and dance numbers.
- Many modern hits blend two genres at once.
How to Play
Tap any card to flip it over, revealing the genre image underneath. Tap a second card — if the two match, they stay face up and you keep going. If not, they flip back after a moment. Your goal is to match every pair in as few moves as possible.
Three difficulty levels are available: easy (6 pairs), medium (8 pairs) and hard (12 pairs). Switch between them any time with the difficulty buttons above the board. Start on easy if you're new, or jump straight to hard for a proper brain workout.
TV & Movies deck questions
Is this theme okay for kids' sleepover parties?
Yes — the pictures are popcorn-and-movie-night staples rather than anything from an actual film, so there are no spoilers and no licensing issues, just the shared ritual of a big night in.
Why do themed decks beat generic picture decks?
Because recognition and delight do half the memorising for you. A board of things people already love turns the memory test into something they would play anyway — which is the whole point of theme decks.
